据永新县多名网友向记者介绍，视频中的女生均为永新县人，其中有永新县城南中学生。“视频中说的话都是永新方言，打人原因可能是因为平时在学校有些小矛盾导致。”[4]
因涉案人员为未成年人，警方通报中均使用化名。警方通报称，视频涉事人员共11人：黄A、贺B、刘C、龙D、刘E、文F、钟G、刘H、赵J、刘K、段L。黄A、贺B、刘C、龙D原是永新县思源学校初中部学生，黄A和贺B是该校学生会成员，在平时学生管理中与刘C、龙D发生矛盾，刘C对黄A心生怨恨。
警方通报称，中考完后，刘C与黄A两人在QQ上争吵互骂，最后黄A服软在QQ上向刘C道歉，但刘C要求必须当面道歉，黄A被迫答应。6月21日下午13时左右，在刘C的强约下，黄A从芦溪乡家中坐车赶往县城，途径贺B家，便邀上贺B共同赴约。当日下午14时许，二人在永新县中心广场与刘C一伙人9人会面。此后，刘C等人把黄A和贺B带至县中心广场一处巷子里进行殴打。后因一妇女出面制止，刘C等人又把二人裹挟至金鼎大厦楼顶天台上，继续殴打黄A。[1]
