夯管施工法的工作原理是夯管锤在压缩空气驱动下产生的较大冲击力直接作用在钢管后端，克服土层与管体间的摩擦力，通过前端钢质切削管头切入土体，被切削的土芯暂时留在钢管，待夯管成功后，取下切削管头，用压气、高压水射流或螺旋钻杆等方法将土芯排出。
夯管施工法对地层的适应性较强，除有大量岩体和较大石块外，几乎可在任何土层中使用。可在覆盖层较浅的情况下施工，铺管直径范围大，设备简单，投资少，操作、维修方便，施工成本低，施工精度较高，水平和高程偏差可控制在2%范围内。
由于管材要承受相当大的冲击力，因此，夯管施工法仅限于钢管施工，一般使用无缝钢管，且壁厚要满足一定要求，管径范围为200-2000mm.铺设长度要根据夯管锤的功率、管径、地质条件而定，一般在80m内，最长可达150m.此方法的效率高，施工速度为15-30m/h。
